Kayleigh’s Umi Mahtolah (Beertje)

august 27, 2001 – june 22, 2012

On Friday, June 22, 2012, we had to say goodbye to our dear Beertje. Born deaf and later in her life suffering from primary epilepsy, so they had to swallow several drugs, the side effects were ultimately her undoing. Her body did not want to go on. And with much pain in our hearts we let her go. Beertje was a great dog to live with. Always cheerful and fun in her life. She was our “fun letter” from the pack and thanks to her we learned a lot about deaf dogs. The deafness of Beertje was pretty easy to live with, after some thought and a good book read about it. But epilepsy is just another story. Before we had Beertje, we already knew how devastating this disease is for a dog and especially for border collies. And if we already have had any doubts, then Beertje really showed us what this disease is all about. Beertje was an angel, our sunshine. A unique dog, who we will never forget. Her “yodel” sounds is still ringing in our heads. Now she has peace and no more problems and that thought makes us extremely well.

Dear Beertje, we miss you terribly, but know that it is so good. See you later dear idiot!

When I look into your eyes
It’s like watching the night sky
Or a beautiful sunrise
There’s so much they hold
And just like them old stars
I see that you’ve come so far
To be right where you are
How old is your soul?

I won’t give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
I’m giving you all my love
I’m still looking up

And when you’re needing your space
To do some navigating
I’ll be here patiently waiting
To see what you find

‘Cause even the stars they burn
Some even fall to the earth
We’ve got a lot to learn
God knows we’re worth it
No, I won’t give up
